Want to know what it’s like to take a virtual dance class at home? Trust me when I say it’s just as unglamorous but also cup filling of an experience as one might assume.
It’s been about a year since my last in person dance class and, mannnn, do I miss it. Feeling the music blast through your body while vibing off the energy of the people dancing, sweating, jamming along with you in the studio… It’s an invigorating experience that just can’t be beat.
Even though I’m not the biggest fan of virtual dance.. It’s not a good enough excuse for me to veg out on the couch and not dance at all. We’re in pandemic times and pickers can’t be choosers.
So this year, I’m pushing myself to be more open, engaged and adaptable when it comes to dancing virtually. One positive thing about virtual dance is that I now have access to train with dance teachers from around the world. So my goal is to take one dance class a week in a different style and lean into having an open ‘student’ mindset for every class. No Negative “I miss how it use to be” Nancy this year.
As of right now, the corner in my living room has been designated as my “dance space”. I don’t have a mirror so I can’t see my body lines while dancing which can be sometimes frustrating because I’m not sure if I’m doing the movement correctly. But I appreciate that not having a mirror makes me focus on how the movement ‘feels’ in my body, instead of how it ‘looks.’
Today’s self portrait post is a little different than what I typically share because it’s not a series of photos but instead a VIDEO…
Why yes. I finally tidied up my youtube account and recorded and edited a 60 minute dance class down into a 3 minute honest look into what it’s like to take a virtual dance class at home… At least, how the experience was for me.
Mind you, I need to re-emphasize that this was my first dance class in a year so I was feeling pretty rusty but it is what it is. Gotta start somewhere, right?
When in doubt, dance it out.
Hope you enjoy and wishing you a restorative Sunday!

P.S. To follow up on the subject of youtube, I’m honestly not sure where I plan to go with it. All I know is that I’ve always been curious about using video as a format for storytelling and I’m giving myself free reign to learn some new skills, experiment and have fun with the content I create and share out this year.
P.P.S. In case you’re curious, you can catch some of my other dance videos on Instagram via this hashtag.
