The end of May marks the beginning of strawberry season. As such, I thought it would be fun for Giney and I to go strawberry picking last weekend.
Strawberries grow low to the ground, underneath the shade of foliage which means you gotta really crouch down and look for the ripe ones. And obviously, the redder the better.
^^ She grabbed a rotten strawberry and was like “Ewwwww strawberry guts!” (LOL)

What I love the most about picking fruit from the source, in this case – Great Country Farms, is the price. For the two cartons of strawberries in the above below, I paid $4.99! I repeat, FOUR DOLLARS AND NINETY-NINE CENTS.
If I were to go to a grocery store, one carton would go for about $6. Just goes to show how much of a killing grocery stores make off of fruit. And by “killing”, I mean “money”.
And so with our freshly picked strawberries, I decided to use them to make dessert later in the day which is the perfect lead-in for the recipe I’m sharing today:
A Super Simple Berry Crumble Recipe that’s been my go-to for the past couple of years.
Here’s what you’ll need to make a berry crumble for 2 people (double up the ingredients for 4, etc.):
Fruit Seasoning:
– 1 cup of strawberries (diced up like in the photo above)
– 1 cup of blackberries or blueberries (or you could 2 cups of strawberries but I like to add black or blueberries so the mixture comes out purple after baking)
– 2 tablespoons of sugar
– 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
– a dash of cinnamon (or a few dashes if you’re a cinnamon lover like me)
Crumble Topping:
– 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour
– 1/4 cup of brown sugar
– 1/4 cup of sugar
– 1/4 cup of salted butter
PREP
First things first, preheat the oven to 350°F and prep your pie plate with non-stick spray or coat it with butter.
Once that’s done, dice up the strawberries and combine with blackberries in a bowl.
^^ Mix together the sugar, flour and cinnamon.
^^ Then mix the seasoning with the fruit until it’s evenly coated and set aside.
Now for the Crumble Topping…
Melt the butter in the microwave until it super soft but not liquidy. I usually put it for about 15-20 seconds in the microwave.
Then mix the butter with the flour, brown sugar, and regular sugar together until it looks like coarse meal.
^^ Add the seasoned fruit to the pie plate.
^^ And sprinkle the topping over the berries until it’s evenly covered.
Pop the pie plate into the center of oven until the fruit is bubbling and the topping is golden brown.
I usually first check it after 45 minutes to see how it’s doing then check on it again every 5 minutes until it gets the golden brown look I want.

Once that’s the oven, you know the deal – wash the dishes and/or, on this particular day, make dinner. We had Beyond Burgers (vegan burgers that legit look and taste like meat courtesy of culinary creativity and beets – I prefer them over Morningstar patties now) with a side of breakfast potatoes.
I like to make dessert (that needs to be baked in the oven) before I get started on making dinner or lunch because if you time it out right, it will finish baking right when you’re done eating the main course… This is ideal because no one likes waiting longer than necessary to have dessert. Am I right or am I right?
During dinner, my timer went off after 45 minutes and, after my initial check, I let it stay in the oven for an additional 8 minutes before taking it out and letting it cool down for 10 minutes.
^^ Voila! Hello yummy goodness.
As for toppings, you could go with ice cream but, every once in a while, I prefer frozen cool whip. That’s right, not defrosted but frozen cool whip. It’s pretty bangin.
As for referencing the original recipe, well… I learned how to make this by word-of-mouth from an old friend who made it for me a couple of years ago. It was simple enough that I was able to remember and make it again the following week and so forth.
What I love about this recipe is that you can switch up the fruit however you want.
Sometimes, I use raspberries and blueberries. Sometimes, I use strawberries and mango (this combo is realllllly good too). It all depends on my mood and craving.
What’s your favorite baked fruit dessert to make?
